Monster - Walter Dean Myers

'Monster' is a novel by Walter Dean Myers. In it, a black boy named Steve Harmon is put on trial for beingan accomplice to murder. He is a film club member, and the book is written like a movie script. While those who know him closely say he is innocent, and would never commit a crime, many witnesses are called in who falsely testify that he was a lookout for the robbery. While he is in jail, he hears inmates being beaten by others and witnesses gruesome fights.

Myers uses these facts to explore emotions felt by the inmates, some of which have discussions with Steve about being guilty and getting their sentences. Many of them felt regret for the actions that got them into jail. Steve also includes notes in the book, many of which hint at a sense of despair.

The book's format made it hard to read, but I was still able to read it in less than a day. This book was a good book, and it was easy to read a little at a time. I recommend this book to anyone who needs a book to read but doesn't want to spend a lot of time or money.
